How to explain a gap in your CV
A period away from work shows straight away in the dates of a CV. Presented in one clear line, it becomes a fact like any other, and you stay in control in the interview.
Mention it on the CV
Beyond a few months, one dated line is enough, in its place in the timeline:
- "2023 – 2024: parental leave";
- "2022: sabbatical year, travel and learning Spanish";
- "2024: data analysis training";
- "2021 – 2022: career break for family reasons".
You choose the level of detail. For health, "career break for personal reasons" is enough.
Show what you did during the break
Training, volunteering, a personal project, short assignments: anything that keeps your skills current can go in the line for the break or in the Training and Projects sections. A recent skill or a newly learned tool reassures the recruiter about your return.
Answer in the interview
Prepare a short three-part answer: the reason in one sentence, what you did during that time, and why you are ready for this role today. Then bring the conversation back to the role. See also the CV for returning to work.
Frequently asked questions
From what length should a gap in a CV be explained?
A gap of two or three months between jobs usually goes unnoticed. Beyond six months, a line of explanation helps.
Can I show a period of unemployment?
Yes, with what you did during it: job search, training, short assignments. Recruiters know these periods well.
Should I give details about a health reason?
The detail is yours to share. "Career break for personal reasons" is a common and accepted wording.
